What is Response to intervention?
Response to Intervention (RTI) is a multi-tier approach to the early identification and support of students with learning and behavior needs. Struggling learners are provided with interventions at increasing levels of intensity to accelerate their rate of learning.These services may be provided by a variety of personnel, including general education teachers, special educators, and specialists. Tier I
Tier I includes all students that are receiving traditional instruction in the general education setting. Students are screened regularly to establish an academic and behavioral baseline and to identify struggling learners who need additional support. Students who are not making progress as expected in Tier I maybe be considered for Tier II.
Tier II
Students who are not progressing in the general education setting are provided with increasingly intensive and intentional instruction. Additional time is spent teaching the specific concept or skill inwhich the student is struggling. Students are given increasingly gudied instruction as well as independent practice in carrying out task that demostrate that learning has occurred. Students who are not making progress as expected in this Tier maybe be considered for Tier III.
Tier III
Tier III intervention are increasingly intensive than Tier II. Instruction are usually delivered in very small groups or in a one on one setting. Students who do not response to Tier II and Tier III maybe referred for special education evaluation.
