The holistic approach
- When assesing a student or interpreting data, even before sending them to be tested for having a disability, a holistic view of the students is extremely vital. A child's environment shapes him/her, and a variety of things influence how they perform, including household issues, environmental impacts, loss in the family, and even domestic tragedies (house fires).
- This information can be gathered through observations, background data, and parental interviews.
It is important to note- 'A student should not be defined by the results of his/her tests.'

Interventions -
Interventions -
- Even before students are reffered for eligibility decisions, teachers can utilize educational planning to help these students achieve their academic and behavioral goals. Teachers can continue to assess students' progress through direct assessment by outlining short-term objectives, benchmarks, and long-term goals in this plan. However if there is no response to these interventions further measures can be taken.

1. Educational planning - Strategies and interventions used to help students succeed.
4. Long term goals- accounts of expected development that a student will achieve in one year based on no.2. and 3.
- 2. Short term objectives - Observable and measurable goals that show how a student is progressing toward his or her annual goals.
4. Long term goals- accounts of expected development that a student will achieve in one year based on no.2. and 3.

Background Information & Referral
Freddy Jones was referred by his parents for special education services because he has a Speech Language Disorder (Expressive Language). Although he is currently receiving specialized instruction with the special education teacher for 44 minutes a day and 30 minutes of intervention of math daily, his parents requested that he be placed in a co-taught math class next year.

Classroom Observations
Freddy was observed on four (4) different occasions. He seem to be very attentive in class and complete all assigned tasks even if his responses are incorrect. However, Freddy's teacher has reported that he has been unable to successfully complete his math home assignments for the past two (2) weeks when she started the topic of algebra, division and measurement.

Test Results
Test Interpretation
Based on the observations on Freddy's test results, he was able to perform well on simple equations dealing with numbers. However, he seemed to have experienced difficulties with equations dealing with both numbers and letters. He scored poorly on the topics algebra, and geometry . He appears to have a slightly higher ability to perform simple sums on addition. Some feedback provided by Freddy's teacher on the teacher report checklist indicated that Freddy was unable to success perform well in his algebra equations because of his age. Additionally, due to his inability to understand both letters and numbers together, it may have resulted in his low performance in algebra.
Summary & Conclusions
Freddy is currently performing well in solving simple sums. However, he is extremely weak in questions that require more critical thinking skills. These weakness therefore may be the reason why he is unable to move on from simple to more difficult tasks. His speech language disorder may also play a role in his inability to understand mixed questions.
Recommendations
1. Freddy may benefit from peer tutoring on the topics that deals with numbers and letters together.
2. Freddy may benefit from more hands-on activities during his math classes.
3. Freddy will benefit from more reading comprehension practice.
4. Freddy will benefit from more social interactions with his peers to assist with the development of his speech.
